The work brilliantly displays Lebasque's painting style which was derived from Pointillism and particularly close contact with his painter friends Paul Signac and Maximilien Luce. The artwork was created prior to 1905 and therefore preceded his time in Lagny.

Lebasque was admired because of his painting themes and the unique joy in his colors and shapes. In art history, Henri Lebasque is called "the painter of joy and light."

After his studies he joined the studio of Bonnat. Simultaneously he also maintained an intensive exchange with young painters such as Vuillard and Bonnard, the founders of the artists' associations called "Nabis" and "Intimists"'.

In 1903, together with Matisse and other artists, he founded the Salon d'Automne.

The first retrospective exhibition of his work was presented only twenty years after his death at the Musée des Ponchettes in Nice.
